Volta is a new way to produce music, using space both as a medium and an output. It is a mixed reality interface that connects to audio production software to make creating and mixing spatial audio not just easier and more intuitive but expressive like a musical instrument.
In the same way that stereo audio dramatically expanded the sonic capacities of audio recording from mono audio, many in the music industry (from engineers at Abbey Road to electronic music pioneers) believe spatial audio is the next logical step on that trajectory. Volta’s primary feature and the reason for it being built into a 3D environment is to be a physically interactive (and thus by far more intuitive) method for editing and mixing spatial audio than what currently exists.
Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs for short) are the primary audio production tool for everyone from classical composers to bedroom producers. Volta is not a new DAW but a new user interface/experience that translates the utility and functionality of a DAW into a three dimensional environment in virtual reality. For this reason, Volta does not compete with existing audio production software companies and there are practically no interruptions to a producer or composer’s workflow.
